Down the winding stairs

A whole other world lies.

A labyrinth of literature,

A torrent of tomes,

Streaming their secret words

From its sprawling shelves.

Sparkling dust clouds the air,

A musty yet welcome aroma,

The scent of slowly unfurling

That first beckoning page,

Opening the papery portal

To boundless, infinite wonder.

Few tread this uncharted forest,

But all find their own path

In the form of covert words

Guiding them in their plight.

They speak it with no sound,

But answer every question.

These mutters hang ghostily

In the stifling, eerie stillness,

Reincarnated as rows of relics

In the unending passages

That dreamers are doomed

To get hopelessly lost in.

This escape is set in stone

Or scribed in eternal ink.

This place is their haven,

Their own hallowed halls

Of heroes and heretics alike

Who speak to their hearts.

Reality still remains outside,

It is the literary life force

That scribblers thrive upon,

And there it will always be,

Beyond that creaky door,

Tethering us to the tangible.
